Micro concrete over kitchen tiles

In an interior, a tiled floor has an impact on the entire décor of the home. An old kitchen floor can be a hindrance to the creation of a new decor, and can often be a source of wear and tear.

Marius Aurenti waxed concrete can be used to cover old tiles in a thickness of just 2 to 3 mm. This technical feat was perfected almost 20 years ago, making Marius Aurenti the world pioneer in thin-walled waxed concrete. Performance tests show that 2 mm of Marius Aurenti waxed concrete has extremely high mechanical strength (see technical data sheets). Thickness and strength allow waxed concrete to be used in all living areas, which can be easily connected to one another with no visual break in the floor and no level between rooms. No extra steps or need to fit a rod to compensate for a difference in level.

How do I apply waxed concrete to kitchen tiles?

Application on tiles requires professional know-how. Preparing the substrate is crucial to the success of waxed concrete over old tiles.

We’ll need to diagnose the substrate, whether slab or screed, and determine the condition and insulation of basements. Preparation is then required to ensure adhesion to the tile, block out any rising damp and perfectly level the floor at joints and outcrops. Preparing tiles for waxed concrete application generally requires an additional two days.

This type of application is often undertaken when demolishing partitions and remodeling rooms. Waxed concrete can be finished in a number of different ways: using finishing strips, leaving it unfinished or inserting an aesthetic pattern. Application is then made to the prepared substrate in accordance with site rules and conditions.

Waxed concrete jobs generally take a week to complete, to which must be added the time required for the varnishes to dry before the site can be put back into service.

The application of waxed concrete over old tiles can be done on the floor or wall in a living room, but also in a bathroom where waterproofing and airtightness constraints are decisive.

Professional advice should be sought to prepare the substrates for such a project.

Protecting waxed concrete over old tiles is usually done with varnishes. The reputation of Marius Aurenti concrete varnishes has been built up over the years through their use in the public domain for the construction and protection of engineering structures.

In the materials section, you’ll find the different preparation and finishing products, as well as the different types of concrete.

On old tiles, we generally use Classic waxed concrete, which offers the greatest versatility: application on floors and walls in living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

Where should tiles not be laid?

Marius Aurenti does not carry out application work on old outdoor tiles, as temperature and humidity variations are too great. Moreover, if the waterproofing is unreliable, the adhesion of the tiles is not guaranteed. For outdoor applications, MA’s recommends systematically returning to the raw slab on which the waxed concrete will be applied, slab quality permitting.  In the case of irregularities or defects in flatness or slope, can be corrected before applying the waxed concrete.

Another special case is tile adhesion defects. A preliminary survey tests the adhesion of the tiles to the substrate. If visible defects are evident (cracking, delamination), the work will not be carried out, or will go through a specific preparation phase approved by the CSTB.
