SUBSTRATE AND SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Indoors: Concrete, mortar, chipboard, aerated concrete, plasterboard, tiles, etc. Sound, dry, cohesive and clean surface. Outdoor supports are excluded.

The substrate must be free of any treatment that may prevent epoxy adhesion, in particular dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax, paint, cleaning and maintenance products, etc.

Slabs and screeds must be at least 28 days old (according to DTU, to be checked with the screed manufacturer or mason) and free of surface carbonations by physical or chemical treatment.

A mechanical diamond surfacing operation is essential to roughen the substrate and open up its porosity.

Check the residual moisture content of the substrate (4% and < 0.5% in the case of anhydrite screed), and test the surface hardness.

WEDI shower tray supports are permitted. Check that they have been pre-sealed with the WEDI system.

PREPARING THE SUBSTRATE FOR EXISTING TILES

A visual and acoustic inspection of the substrate must be carried out in accordance with DTU 54.1.

In the case of tiling, all tiles must be well sealed and joints perfectly cohesive and clean. Tile adhesion should be checked by probing.

For surfaces with less than 10% of tiles failing, the failing tiles must be removed and a sandblasted epoxy mortar poured in their place. For surfaces with more than 10% of tiles failing, the substrate is considered unsound and ineligible for coating.

FOR THE TREATMENT OF STABILIZED CRACKS, WITH NO DE-WATERING, BETWEEN 0.3 AND 0.8 MM

REMINDER: Cracking is revealed by wetting of the surface. A substrate with cracks wider than 0.3 mm is not compliant and cannot receive a floor coating without repairing the crack.

The company that created the substrate must treat these cracks; it can subcontract this operation to the cladding contractor.

Cracks between 0.3 and 0.8mm wide will be treated as follows:

  1. They will be sealed by cutting a V-shaped opening in the crack to a depth of 10 mm and a width of at least 5 mm.
  2. The groove is vacuumed to remove any dust, then filled with EPX2 Superior Primer Mortar (EPX2 Superior Primer + SQ10 sand).
  3. A bi-axial – 45 / + 45 E-glass fiber mesh is then laid over the crack.

Laying the screen :

Apply 400 g/m² of EPX2 Superior Primer with a 10 mm microfiber roller Place Marius Aurenti bi-axial mesh on the crack

Apply 400 g/m² of Primer EPX2 Superior with a 10 mm microfiber roller

Make sure the grid is perfectly embedded in EPX2 Superior Primer, and roll it down if necessary to remove any air bubbles. Sand down to size using SQ10 sand.

Allow to dry thoroughly, then remove dust before applying Marius Aurenti Millimetric Decorative Mortar.

In the case of cracks larger than 0.8 mm, or where there is a difference in level, or where the linear distance exceeds 10 m per 100 m², a study must be carried out by a specialized engineering firm to determine the stability of the substrate and the treatment of these cracks, in consultation with Marius Aurenti.

Implementation

PREPARATION

Epoxy mortar for zero-tensioning Thickness from 1 to 4 mm (tile joints…)

Soil: Add 1.5 kg of SQ10 Sand for 1 kg of EPX2 Superior Epoxy Primer. Sprinkle with SQ10 sand to create a mechanical bond with the substrate.

Wall (please refer to the Gelling Agent Technical Data Sheet) :

Add a maximum of 0.02 kg to 0.04 kg of Gelling Agent per 1 kg of EPX2 Superior Primer. Add 1 kg of SQ10 sand.

EPOXY MORTAR TO COMPENSATE FOR LEVEL DIFFERENCES OR FILL HOLES

These data are indicative and may vary according to temperature and relative humidity conditions. Always carry out a trial run first.

Epoxy mortar for thicknesses between 5 mm and 9 mm

Soil: Add 9 kg to 12 kg maximum of SQ40 Sand for 1 kg of EPX2 Superior Epoxy Primer.

Epoxy mortar for thicknesses between 10 and 20 mm

Floor: Add 9 kg to 12 kg maximum of SQ60 Sand for 1 kg of EPX2 Superior Epoxy Primer.

Epoxy mortar for thicknesses > 20 mm

Floor: Add 9 kg to 12 kg maximum of SQ80 Sand for 1 kg of EPX2 Superior Epoxy Primer.

A final coat of epoxy mortar is always recommended after the application of epoxy mortars used to level or fill holes.

Indicative consumption for 1 m² on 1 cm thickness :

Approx. 30 kg mortar (EPX2 Superior + SQ80) in the proportions 2.3 kg EPX2 Superior + 27.7 kg SQ80.

IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS

Non-compliance with the mixing proportions between components A and B and sands, or the use of other products, will alter the quality of the system (reduced adhesion and mechanical performance, etc.). The Gelling Agent is an additive recommended for wall applications, to prevent creep in vertical position (please refer to the Gelling Agent Technical Data Sheet).

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

Using a 6 mm notched comb with triangular teeth and a Parfait’Liss 35 cm smoothing machine from OUTIL PARFAIT or equivalent.

Implementation 5

CONDITIONS OF APPLICATION

TEMPERATURE: >10°C and <30°C

SUBSTRATE TEMPERATURE: Substrate temperature must be +3°C above dew point, to avoid condensation.

SUBSTRATE HUMIDITY: <4% and <0.5% for anhydrite screeds. There must be no rising damp according to ASTM D4263 (polyane test).

RELATIVE HUMIDITY: <80%

Protect from wind, direct sunlight, rain, frost and the environment during application and curing.

Mix component A EPX2 Superior alone thoroughly by mechanical means.

When exposed to low temperatures, component A can thicken considerably, to the point where mixing becomes impossible. This phenomenon does not affect product performance and is totally reversible. In this case, the use of a heating belt is recommended. In fact, it may be advisable to expose component A for 8 hours at 35-40°C (indicative data to be adapted according to the volume of product to be heated), to refluidify it before use. Check the temperature of component A before use (a product that is too hot may have too short an open time).

Next, add component B and mix mechanically for several minutes, in the proportion 667g A to 333g B = 1 kg EPX2 Superior ready-to-use.

EPOXY MORTAR APPLICATION FOR ZERO-TENSIONING (TILE JOINTS, ETC.)

Mix component A alone using a mechanical agitator.

Then add component B and mix mechanically for at least 3 minutes. The mixture should be perfectly homogeneous. We recommend mixing at low speed and positioning the agitator at the bottom of the bucket to minimize the incorporation of air.

Add SQ10 sand and continue mixing for 2 minutes.

Apply the mortar with a 6 mm notched triangular comb and smooth with a Parfait’Liss smoothing machine to obtain a perfectly smooth surface.

If you wish to apply MA’s waxed concrete afterwards, sprinkle with SQ10 Sand while the layer is still fresh.

In all cases, sprinkle the sand evenly over the surface, vacuum up any excess when the primer is dry and check that there are no gaps. This is the key to a successful hook.

If a hollow remains after drying (if the joints are deep), pull to zero again and sprinkle with Sable SQ10 while the epoxy primer is still fresh.

Once the sandblasted epoxy mortar is perfectly dry and dust-free, the floor can be levelled using a diamond surfacing operation.

CONSUMPTION

Mortar application (for a total thickness of between 1 and 4 mm): approx. 2 to 3 kg (primer + sand) /m2 for 2 mm thickness.

Consumption should be adjusted according to the substrate, so that the resulting surface is flat and joints filled. 2 coats can be applied if necessary.

Mortar application for walk-in shower trays (WEDI tray): approx. 8kg (primer + sand)/m² for a thickness of approx. 3 mm. Use gelling agent if necessary.

DRYING TIME AT 20°C AND 60% RELATIVE HUMIDITY

OPEN TIME (SUPERIOR EPX2 MORTAR) :

+10°C: approx. 40 minutes

+20°C: approx. 20 minutes

+30°C: approx. 10 minutes

LIGHT TRAFFIC: 24 hours

RECOVERABLE BY DECORATIVE COATING: 24 hours

FULL DRYING: 8 days

At 10°C, drying times are more than doubled.

These data are indicative, as curing times vary according to drying conditions (temperature and relative humidity in particular).
